Zero Positive is a non-profit, first-of-its-kind program for reducing emissions. As endorsed by the UN, the Program has been designed to give schools and their communities the resources, instruction, and support they need to begin the journey toward achieving net-zero emissions targets while becoming environmentally positive. Zero Positive for Schools is a global initiative to help schools reduce their carbon footprint. This initiative aims to create a positive impact on the environment and its people. The initiative aims to promote sustainability among students and teachers by introducing them to environmental issues and solutions.

It is a program that works to make schools more environmentally friendly, and we’re proud to support it! The initiative focuses on raising awareness about environmental issues in schools and encouraging children to be more mindful of what they can do to help the planet. As an organization that believes in the importance of both learning about the world around us and making an impact on it, we feel very strongly about this initiative. The program is designed to help students learn how they can contribute to their school’s greening efforts by providing them with tangible, readable data. Real energy data is used by the Zero Positive initiative to help educate and empower students and educators. Students can monitor their progress in lowering their emissions and improving their sustainability with the help of their metering equipment and data collection platform.

The Asian elephant populations can be found in 13 countries across South and Southeast Asia, sadly their numbers are fast declining with an estimated 30,000 – 50,000 left in the wild. Both the Sumatran and Borneo elephants are heading towards extinction with less than 1,500 remaining. Elephants have large home ranges and with the unprecedented rate at which the rainforest is disappearing due to drought, forest fires, illegal logging and growing human populations, their future is bleak if we do not take immediate action.

Elephant migration plays a vital role in balancing out the natural ecosystem, they travel over vast areas of land in search of enough vegetation and water sources to meet their needs. Feeding on a variety of plants, they disperse seeds in their dung which help generate new growth ensuring their ecosystem constantly replenishes and evolves. Elephant herd sizes consist of 20 or more predominantly female elephants with the matriarch being the eldest female. Known for their intelligence and empathy, elephant herds have an intricate social structure. The males tend to leave the herd at adolescence and many lead fairly solitary lives, though some come together in bachelor pods.

The decimation of their habitat to pave the way for unsustainable agriculture, plantations, mining, human settlements and infrastructure is not only compromising their food sources, herd and migration routes, but is also placing the future of this migratory species at risk by creating human-elephant conflict as they compete for the same resources.

Sadly 70% of the time, elephants venture into unprotected areas, they are often found travelling through human-dominated areas resulting in the damage of crops, property and even human injury and death. The outcome of such incidents is retaliation, often by poison, thus threatening their species even more.

As well as poaching elephants for their ivory, skin and meat, their population is also threatened by snares placed in the forest areas they cross. Such traps are set by villagers to catch wild pigs or deer; however, elephants are becoming casualties, often dying from infected wounds. In addition to these unfortunate facts, many elephants are still being exploited and experience lives of hardship in captivity due to unregulated tourism practices throughout Asia.

Family plays a vital role in herd behaviour and when one of these gentle giants is affected by man, it disrupts their social structure leaving them even more vulnerable.

The IEP has been supporting the Elephant Conservation Centre in Laos which includes the only elephant hospital in the area. This initiative also sources and protects substantial amounts of land which allows for socialisation and natural breeding. Donations are used to fund ranger teams who patrol and protect this 190,000-hectare ecosystem which houses both wild and rewilded Laos elephants. Sadly, the COVID-19 Pandemic has severely disrupted the funds that they rely on from ethical eco-tourism resulting in vital elephant populations being at further risk from poaching and habitat destruction.

With poaching and deforestation on the rise and declining fundraising donations, the Wildlife Ambulance teams are on the verge of scaling back their efforts or worse becoming extinct themselves. Their teams on the ground consist of vets, who not only provide life-saving assistance to injured and displaced elephants in Sumatra but who also work tirelessly to train the next generation of vets. They are in desperate need of $50,000 by the end of this year to be able to continue their vital work.

Fortunately for us, Seabin Project is well on its way to making a positive impact cleaning up our oceans.

To date, they have managed to remove over 3 million kilograms of marine litter from our oceans and captured approximately 58.4 million items of plastic using 1,100 Seabins strategically placed in controlled environments such as marinas, yacht clubs and ports around the globe. Seabins are currently collecting on average 2,800kg of marine litter per day worldwide.

Seabin Project is a collaboration between Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski that started back in 2013. With their typical Aussie surfing upbringings, a passion for all things ocean-related, a background in design coupled with a DIY attitude and a vision to clean up our deep blue oceans, the concept of a Seabin was created.

Sitting at the water’s surface, using a 12v submersible pump, over 600,000 litres of water is passed through its internal catch bag filter on a daily basis. Seabin’s capture 3.9kg of marine litter per day, on average. Microplastics and foam (polystyrene) are the most common items of marine litter captured, accounting for 29% and 32% of the total captured marine litter respectively. Seabins also improve the water quality of their local marine environment by retaining some oils and liquid pollutants in the absorbant oil pads installed in the base of each unit’s catch bag.

Seabin Environmental Technicians are as important as the technology. They manage not only the frequent emptying, maintenance and data recording of the units but they also involve and educate the local community on the work they do and the effects of plastics in the ocean. With awareness comes responsibility and an opportunity to implement behavior changes. All these factors work together to ‘turn off the tap’ to land based pollution entering our oceans.

Over the past year in Sydney, the Smarter Cities Programme removed over 16.5 tonnes of marine litter from only 16 Seabins in areas such as Manly Wharf, Rose Bay and Pyrmont. The 30+ Seabin volunteers played a vital role in recording the data which has been a game changer. “We now have tangible data showing the desperate need to clean up our harbour waterways” said Scott, Marine Manager. According to the Seabin marine litter report released August 2021, the data collected can be used to influence decision-makers and policy, and reduce the prevalence of land-based litter upstream.

In September 2020 alone 1,537 kilos of marine litter was collected in Sydney. Let’s put that into sporting terms – it is the equivalent of 33 football fields covered with plastic shopping bags. The amount collected over the year-long Sydney pilot scheme was the equivalent of 351 football fields!

Take a second, close your eyes and visualise what that looks like.

What isn’t a mystery and is sadly a stark reality is an estimated nine million metric tonnes of durable, cheap plastic with a lifespan of up to 400 years gets dumped into our oceans every year, not only threatening marine life, but it continues to release greenhouse gasses resulting in the acceleration of climate change threatening all ecosystems on earth.

Immediate action is required not only by large corporations and businesses but as a collective. We all have an obligation to our planet and future generations to do better, to live more consciously to preserve and ensure that our remaining ecosystems survive. Without our precious natural resources like clean air and water, life on earth will slowly cease to exist. It’s that simple.

We rely on our oceans not only for food, recreation, stabilising weather patterns globally but they absorb 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere and produce more than 50% of our oxygen. Our Rewards4Earth Ocean Rejuvenation Mandate is committed to help The Seabin Project clean up our Oceans and realise their mission statement.

With less than 400 left living in the wild in Sumatra, Indonesia, they are now listed as Critically Endangered. Sadly, we humans failed the Balinese and Javanese tigers who were pushed to extinction in the 1900s mainly through devastation of their habitat, poaching and traps. We call it the Human -Tiger Conflict. The reality is tigers like so many other innocent species in the wild are not able to compete with greedy humans and unless we drastically change our ways and our demands on our natural resources, these majestic animals will become just mere pictures in books or Wikipedia pages.

Unfortunately for tigers, poaching alongside corruption is still rife despite being illegal under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. The illegal trade for wildlife is worth billions on the black market. With a lack of law enforcement and weak penalties for poachers despite being a protected species in Indonesia, tigers and other endangered wildlife remain at risk.

In order to correctly identify each tiger and monitor their movements, the tigers need to be filmed on both flanks to identify their markings. The traps themselves are expensive and need heavy duty chains and locks so they are not stolen. Nothing is safe from greedy humans – it really is a jungle out there! As well as using their advanced camera tracking, the foot patrols focus on the detection of, and more importantly, the prevention of poaching. The teams patrol at least 15,000 hectares every month to uncover any evidence of illegal activities and to collect wildlife distribution data. On their travels, snares are deactivated and illegal activity is reported to the field office and passed on to law enforcement.

To date, we have assisted the Minderoo Foundation in the Bateman Bay area by providing farmers with 97 much needed pre-fabricated, transportable, furnished Dongas to help them get back on their feet costing nearly a 1.5million dollars.

In conjunction, we worked alongside the Mormon church in the Armidale and Tamworth areas running a 6-month campaign for 50 families providing them with monthly dry food hampers, along with weekly fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat.

One of the communities aided was the Ballata town and the wonderful testimonials below are from some of the Ballata School students.

The Thirsty Cow motto is “to give a hand up not a hand out”. We have invested in educational practices for Farmers to learn how to improve and implement better, more effective farming practices. This proactive initiative is an ongoing project.

Our milk-producing states were hit the hardest by the fires. NSW and Victorian farmers suffered a huge loss of farmland and infrastructure damage. With the absence of La Niña, changing precipitation patterns and severe dry weather for two years prior to the bushfires, their pastures were scorched. Recovery and regrowth are challenged by the little water resources they have available. With livestock and farmland destroyed and the continued threat of drought, the road to recovery for farmers and our precious ecosystem will be long and difficult.

The long-term implications of a steep decline in biodiversity impacts our ecosystems that are crucial for our own global food production. According to the UN, wildlife numbers are declining at an ever-increasing scale globally. When forests burn, the biodiversity that humans rely on for their long-term survival is threatened as forests are home to more than eighty per cent of all species of animals, plants and insects.

The smoke has settled since the devastation of the black summer fires, the cameras have stopped rolling and the media has focused people’s attention onto the pandemic. The generous donations from people all over the world have been put to great use, but sadly due to the COVID Pandemic, they have severely diminished. What we need now is NOT just donations, but a better way to fund these initiatives.

The Rewards4Earth ™ Foundation supports organisations that have solutions for environmental problems. Organisations like Lord of the Trees, which understand that survival, including mankind’s, depends on the health of our natural environment. Forests are one of the most important resources we have. If we want to survive, we must not only stop destroying forests but start regrowing the forests we have already destroyed. Lord of the Trees is a part of an initiative to plant a trillion trees using the latest drone technology to replant deforested areas and restore ecosystems.

Lord of the Trees is an initiative of environmental experts, scientists, engineers, animal protection agencies and indigenous communities that combine the knowledge and experience to facilitate reforestation projects worldwide.

The forestry and ecosystem restoration projects help to rehabilitate deforested land and expand wildlife habitat areas. All that is done by pre-programmed drones that are replanting seedpods into the ground. Drones are used in areas disrupted by agriculture or mining and destroyed by bushfires. Once on-site drones loaded with different seed types and equipped with advanced deployment features distribute the seedpods to affected areas. It allows restoring ecosystems on a vast scale and in a very short time comparing to manual seed planting. One drone pilot operating five drones can plant 432,000 seed pods in just 12 hours at a rate of 2 seedpods per drone per second, one person on foot would have to work full-time every day for a year to do the same job. Thanks to this technology, developed by a team of industrial designers and the help of the global community Lord of the Trees can achieve their goal of planting millions of trees around the world and creating new forests.

As a result, all ecosystems are disappearing, wildlife is extinct, water cycles are changing, we experience more weather anomalies like floods, droughts, and bushfires.
The Orangutan Project is a team of passionate wildlife experts, committed to protecting Critically Endangered orangutans. They have been working for over 20 years to save orangutans from extinction. It’s a vibrant, fast-growing and effective not-for-profit organisation that supports a variety of projects focused on protecting remaining fragmented orangutan populations including fighting deforestation and habitat loss. The projects funded by The Orangutan Project not only include direct orangutan conservation, such as orangutan rescue, rehabilitation and release programs but also forest habitat preservation and restoration, education, research and local community partnerships.

Within the next ten years, The Orangutan Project hopes to increase the number of wild orangutans under permanent protection to 8,000 to ensure all distinct populations of all subspecies of orangutan survive indefinitely. This requires them to help secure 450,000 acres of prime lowland forest and protect it with 180 Wildlife Protection Rangers.

The objectives of The Orangutan Project have many flow-on effects that both protect other Critically Endangered species, such as the Sumatran tiger, elephant and rhino, as well as indigenous and local communities.

Orangutans are the most intelligent creatures on the Earth after humans, and they adapt to their environmental conditions by passing on culture from generation to generation. Their extinction is an individual story of horror as they are macheted and burnt alive as agricultural pest. Almost 80% of orangutan habitat has disappeared in the last 20 years, and we are losing over 6,000 orangutans a year.

Extinction in the wild is likely in the next 10 years for Sumatran orangutans and soon after for Bornean orangutans. Both species are classified as Critically Endangered according to the International UNION FOR Conservation of Nature (www.iucn.org)

Orangutan rainforest habitats are vanishing at an unprecedented pace as a result of deforestation and clearing of the land for pulp paper and palm oil plantations, with the remaining forests degraded by drought and forest fires. Every hour 300 football fields of precious remaining forest are ploughed to the ground across South East Asia to make way for monoculture plantations including palm oil. Palm oil is used in everything from food to soap and is found in over half all packaged items on our supermarket shelves.

Poaching orangutan infants and hunting for meat also threatens the species. Mothers are often killed for their babies, which are sold on the black market as pets. Rescued infants are rehabilitated at orangutan rescue centres, if you are willing to help, you can adopt an orangutan orphan here www.theorangutanproject.org/adopt/
